Introducing your students to the dispatching vocation will enhance their employability!

Before long they will be graduating from your Criminal Justice class. They are 18 years old, bright, energetic and ready to set the world on fire. Many of them will want to put out fires as firemen or be police officers. EMS personnel, lawyers, judges, attorneys, just about every student taking your class, have a reason for being there. Criminal Justice does not attract everyone. Only those young men and women who have a desire to serve the public apply. But how many are college bound, how many have scholarships, and how many already have or soon will have families to support?

The fact is they need jobs, they need good salaries and good working conditions, and they need to stay in the public safety arena. They need to be saying 911 what is your emergency, not Welcome to McDougals, can I take your order.

By offering a 40 hour Emergency Telecommunicator class you will not only be helping these young adults create a future for themselves but will be serving your community by providing a pool of qualified and certified dispatchers for local, state and federal agencies who use 911 Call Takers and Dispatchers. The latest estimates are that it costs a medium sized city $52,000 to train just one dispatcher!

By incorporating public safety dispatching into your class you are creating opportunities for employment which will keep young adults active in the law enforcement arena.

Most states require their applicants to be 21 to apply for a position as a police office, fireman, or any sworn office or occupation. The age group from 18-21 loses many potentially great employees due to the lack of occupations available to them. By learning “Emergency Communications through Simulation” students acquire the concept to react quickly in emergency situations, learn multitasking, radio procedure, and compassion for those in need. Many students will choose dispatching as a career; others use it as a pathway to achieve other respective goals. Regardless of the motivation, dispatching for 18 year olds is a “win win” situation.

Those of you in career and technical schools can think about teaching the handicapped: Wheelchair seating works just fine. Dispatching could be a related job for those injured in the line of duty or those interested in making a career change. Even a part time job as an Emergency Telecommunicator SAVES lives.
