Students apply to become call-takers and dispatchers for various reasons.

The first one is to save lives! Providing public service without actually being on the front line is another.

There are many Benefits to being a dispather
  • You don’t work in burning buildings.
  • No one shoots at you.
  • There are no high speed rides rushing to hospitals and there is no chance of getting contaminated by chemicals or blood pathogens.
  • It doesn’t snow or freeze in a communications center or rain and flood and it’s not 110 degrees in the shade.
  • Usually you will work 12 on and 12 off but agencies vary and there is usually plenty of overtime.
  • Employment age starts around 18 years of age and a high school diploma is required. Pay is about four times minimum wage to start so forget collecting shopping carts or flipping burgers.
  • By being one of the heroes behind the scenes, telecommunicators coordinate police, fire and emergency medical services daily. The logistics of a communications center can be a monumental task.
